Influenza Vaccine Availability and Ordering for the 2018-2019 Season
|
The Ohio Department of Health (ODH) Immunization Program expects to provide influenza (flu) vaccine to Vaccines for Children (VFC) providers comparable to amounts available for the 2017-2018 season.
The total amount of vaccine that is expected to be available for public and private VFC providers for the 2018-19 season is as follows:
- Single dose pre-filled syringes, 0.25 mL Fluzone , preservative-free
Quadrivalent Inactivated Vaccine (QIV) (6 through 35 months):
105,000 doses ---- NDC 49281-0518-25
- Single dose pre-filled syringes, 0.5 mL Fluzone, preservative-free
Quadrivalent Inactivated Vaccine (QIV) (36 months and older):
140,000 doses ---- NDC 49281-0418-50 .
- Multi-dose vials, 5 mL Fluzone, of preservative-containing
Quadrivalent Inactivated Vaccine (QIV) (6 months and older):
25,000 doses ---- NDC 49281-0629-15.
- Single dose pre-filled syringes, 0.5 mL FluLaval, preservative-free Quadrivalent Inactivated Vaccine (QIV) (6 months and older):
160,000 doses ---- NDC 19515-0909-52.
VFC providers who wish to receive flu vaccine for the 2018 -19 flu season can order the vaccine online through the ImpactSIIS/Vaccine Ordering Management System (VOMS). The VFC Flu order set will be available in VOMS August 20 through August 31, 2018. Each location should place a single order that includes a sufficient quantity of flu vaccine for the entire 2018-19 season.
VFC providers will not have the ability to order standard VFC vaccines during this two-week order period while flu vaccine orders are entered and processed. VFC providers should submit their VFC (non-flu) vaccine orders by Friday, August 17, 2018. VFC vaccine (non-flu) orders will resume on Tuesday, September 4, 2018. VFC providers should order enough vaccine to assure adequate vaccine stock during this two-week period. Please contact your ImpactSIIS Trainer at 1-866-349-0002 if you have any questions or concerns with creating your flu order.
Providers who are unable to submit their flu orders through ImpactSIIS/VOMS but wish to receive flu vaccine for the 2018 -19 flu season will be able to submit their orders online through an electronic order form which will be provided after the first allocation. This link will be made available on the ImpactSIIS homepage and by request.
VFC providers are reminded that they are authorized to use ODH-supplied flu vaccine for the following eligible populations:
Children aged 18 years and under are eligible for the VFC program if they:
- Are eligible for Medicaid
- Have no health insurance
- Are Native American or Alaskan Native
Underinsured children who have health insurance, but immunizations are not covered, are VFC eligible at a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC), Rural Health Clinic (RHC), or deputized local health department only.
Please review the following guidance on flu vaccine prioritization and need estimation instructions prior to completing and submitting your flu vaccine order.
Vaccine Need Estimation Guidance
Providers are asked to review actual flu vaccine usage for the 2017-2018 season, rather than the amount ordered. Please take into account any unused doses when placing your order.
Patient Specific Reporting of Flu Doses Administered
ODH recommends patient-specific reporting of federally and privately purchased flu vaccine doses into ImpactSIIS, the statewide immunization registry. This can occur either through direct entry or through an existing upload protocol using an electronic medical record system.
Flu Vaccine Shipments
It is expected that providers will receive their supplies of flu vaccine in multiple shipments. Please ensure that all staff responsible for vaccine receipt and storage and handling are aware that the vaccine is to be placed in refrigeration between 36°F and 46°F upon receipt.
Scheduling Flu Clinics and Vaccine Promotion
Each flu season, the production and shipments of flu vaccine are not entirely predictable. ODH cautions VFC providers against scheduling immunization clinics early in the flu vaccination season, as ODH is not able to guarantee flu vaccine delivery dates.
We appreciate your partnership to protect children from flu. If you have any questions about ODH-supplied flu vaccine and ordering, please contact the ODH Immunization Program at (800) 282-0546 or (614) 466-4643.
